WHAT IS GANGSTER SOUL HARMONY

What Is Gangster Soul Harmony?

Gangster Soul Harmony is an independent rare soul music compilation, archival and vinyl record series founded by Los Angeles record collector, curator and producer George Miller Jr. in 2005.

Created from a lifelong passion for discovering overlooked soul music, Gangster Soul Harmony was built to preserve and introduce rare recordings that often existed far outside the mainstream music industry. The series focuses on hard-to-find soul, sweet soul, harmony soul, rare oldies and independent recordings many of them originally issued in small quantities on regional or privately owned record labels during the 1960s and 1970s.

The Roots of Gangster Soul Harmony

The story behind Gangster Soul Harmony began years before the first volume appeared.

George Miller Jr. began seriously collecting rare soul and oldies records in the early 1990s. In 1996, he created Lost and Found Rare Oldies, an early compilation project dedicated to uncovering and sharing difficult-to-find recordings with collectors and listeners who might otherwise never have encountered them.

That work eventually helped lay the foundation for Gangster Soul Harmony.

By 2005, George launched Gangster Soul Harmony, developing a compilation series centered around the records, artists and sounds he had spent years searching for on original 45 RPM vinyl.

Rather than simply compiling familiar hits, Gangster Soul Harmony was created around discovery: obscure vocal groups, independent artists, small record labels, regional releases and recordings that had remained known primarily among serious collectors.

Rare Soul Preserved on Vinyl

At the heart of Gangster Soul Harmony is the original record.

Many of the recordings associated with the series first appeared decades ago on independently released 45 RPM singles. Some were pressed in very limited numbers. Others came from artists or labels whose histories were never extensively documented.

As a collector-led project, Gangster Soul Harmony approaches these recordings from both a musical and historical perspective.

The goal is not simply to sell another record. It is to help keep the music, artists, labels and stories connected to these recordings from disappearing.

Through its vinyl releases and growing online archive, Gangster Soul Harmony documents information surrounding the music whenever reliable historical information is available, including artists, song titles, original labels, recording history and connections between individual recordings and the Gangster Soul Harmony compilation series.

A Sound Connected to a Culture

Gangster Soul Harmony has developed an audience among rare soul collectors, oldies enthusiasts and listeners drawn to the emotional sound of independent soul music.

The catalog includes music associated with the worlds of rare soul, sweet soul, harmony soul and rare oldies, along with recordings that have become part of the musical vocabulary heard within Southern California oldies and lowrider culture.

That connection is important.

For generations of listeners, these recordings have been more than collectible pieces of vinyl. They have been songs played at home, passed between collectors, discovered at record shops and swap meets, heard at gatherings and DJ nights, and preserved through a culture that continued listening long after many original records disappeared from commercial circulation.

Gangster Soul Harmony exists within that tradition.

More Than a Compilation Series

What began as a vinyl compilation series has grown into a larger historical project.

The Gangster Soul Harmony Archive is being developed to document the individual volumes of the series as well as the artists, songs, record labels and original releases connected to the music.

The long-term purpose is to create a reliable digital resource where collectors, researchers, music historians and new listeners can discover information about rare soul recordings that may otherwise have very little documentation available online.

Each archive entry becomes another piece of a larger musical history.

The Mission Today

Today, Gangster Soul Harmony continues to release physical vinyl while preserving the history surrounding the recordings that inspired the series.

Its mission remains rooted in the same idea that started the project:

Find the music. Preserve the history. Respect the artists. Keep the records alive.

More than two decades after Gangster Soul Harmony was founded, the project continues to connect the culture of record collecting with a new generation of listeners while documenting an important corner of independent American soul music.
